The Garmin MapSource 6137 Specialzip is a map and navigation device that enables users to download maps for their Garmin GPS compatible devices. This device has been on the market since 2006 and has had multiple upgrades. The latest version of the device, known as v6137, includes a 32GB SD card loaded with features such as zoomable maps of all 50 states, Canada, the U.S., Mexico and Puerto Rico. It also provides an overview of more than 1200 USGS quads and more than 600 USGS 7" quadrangles in color format with 3-D buildings integrated into the surface. On this device's back, there is a USB port that can be used to download maps via USB cable for use with the Garmin Nuvi 6xx/7x/200/300 series GPS. The 6137 also offers preloaded maps of Canada and Mexico, along with free cellular data for free domestic locations. Maps are updated every two weeks as new quads are published. An optional subscription service can be purchased from Garmin for US$10 per year to provide full coverage of the U.S.; however, there is no issue being able to download those areas that have been covered by Garmin as it is possible to acquire the entire continental United States map at a rate of $25 on Amazon.com. The Garmin MapSource 6137 Specialzip can be plugged into a computer directly through USB. It allows users to download digital version of US Geological Survey topographical maps for use on their GPS device. This map can then be used without an internet connection using your GPS device. Once downloaded, the memory card can be removed from the PC and plugged into the GPS for use. There is also an optional adapter that can be purchased that will allow you to plug it into your computer's SD card reader. You may also download Garmin imagery and real-time weather on this device by plugging it into a computer with a USB cable. It uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 800 mAh. The battery is charged using an included USB cable. It also comes with a holster and vehicle power adapter. In addition to the regular benefits of having a map on your GPS, this device provides the ability to have 3D buildings integrated into the surface of the map. Having a 3D building will help drivers easily identify streets and intersections, which can be especially helpful in unfamiliar areas or during inclement weather. A zoom feature allows users to increase or decrease map features as needed. One slight disadvantage of this device is that it does not have an electronic compass, unlike its predecessor (the MapSource 6996). However, it contains an electronic “pointer” to help users drive in the right direction while holding the device in their hand. This is also a convenience for drivers who use their GPS device while driving. Another disadvantage of this device is that it does not have reading capabilities. With older Garmin devices, you could enter a location by typing an address or other location information, and the directions would be read to you as you traveled. This means that if you are familiar with your route ahead of time, you will have to write down any landmarks along the way to use later on when driving. cfa1e77820
